An opportunity for students from Kindergarten to Grade 8

to view and participate in the visual arts.

The Tour/Hands-On Program is an innovative art enrichment experience offered to students K to 8. Each visit consists of both a tour of the current gallery exhibitions and a Hands-On Workshop.

For Students of High School Age: The Art Centre will gladly assist any teacher in tailoring any activity to suit the abilities of the students.

The printable Tour/Hands-On Program Brochure is available here in Adobe PDF format.

Curriculum Connections are available for the Ontario Public School Board and Catholic School Board.

The Program Aims:

  • To enhance the children's awareness through observation.
  • To develop an understanding of art from an artist's and audience's point of view.
  • To provide a student with a creative activity in a studio environment under the instruction of a professional artist.
  • To extend the program by providing follow-up material in keeping with the school curriculum to the teacher who can then continue and expand upon the visit when back in the classroom.

Tours are led by professionally trained volunteer docents who are there to generate discussion through questions and simple exercises. Hands-on Workshops are conducted by professional artists in well equipped spacious studios.

In choosing your Hands-on experience we suggest that you arrange to have a workshop which compliments the current exhibition. Teachers may be asked to arrange a theme for their workshop but it is up to the discretion of the Hands-on instructor as to the suitability of that theme to the Hands-on lesson plan.
